To begin with, let us all understand what we mean by Self Improvement. What we don't mean is a self absorbed analysis of our shortcomings followed by a depressed inactivity.

No, what we mean is a lifestyle. A lifestyle of getting up and doing something about it. Whether it is healthy eating balanced with reasonable exercise, giving up smoking, improving self confidence, or learning new skills, self improvement means recognizing what you need to do and getting up and doing it. The surprising thing is that the doing is self fulfilling. Just by trying we achieve the first level of self improvement.

Low Self Esteem - We are our own severest critic.

Self Image or Self Esteem is all about how we see ourselves, but unfortunately, the measures we apply to ourselves are often not the same measures we apply to others. Too often we are influenced more by the hurtful comment of a long forgotten schoolyard bully or an all too often remembered thoughtless rebuke of a frustrated office colleague. A parent's often good intentioned remarks also color the way we view ourselves many years later.

The results of poor self  esteem can be devastating. Shyness, stuttering, inability to speak in public, even depression can all result from poor self esteem. The worst thing about it is that most often the only person who holds us in low esteem is ourselves. So what can we do about it. Well, in the cause is also the cure. What we need to do is to really compare the way we look at ourselves with the way we look at our peers and associates, comparing like with like. At the tennis club, don't compare yourself with the club champion, compare yourself to the girl or guy that plays just like you. Assess them and measure yourself against them. If you do this honestly you will find that you are not that much different, and in fact in some ways you are better, and some ways you are worse. But you will also realize that they have their circle of friends and associates within which they are loved and respected. So it is with you. You have your good points, and your bad, but that puts you right there with the majority in this world, just sort of average guys.

OK, so you have taken the first step. Now lets look at the second. While doing that self analysis in the previous paragraph, make a mental list of those areas you felt you compared poorly. Then ask yourself, which of those areas do you care most about. Then do something about it. There is almost not a single attribute that there is nothing you can do about. The trouble is too many of us get so depressed we don't even try. This often exacerbates the problem. So we don't look good, we are a little overweight, we get depressed and eat too much, so we are overweight.

Do something about it. Just taking the decision will make you feel better, and when you see yourself actually achieving something, that really makes you feel good. It's easy to be bright or good looking or good at sports. That comes from the way you were born. It is much harder to not be, but to get up and do something about it. doing that lifts you above the average. And for that you should feel really good about yourself.
